History

In 1855, the Hong Kong Auxiliary of the British & Foreign Bible Society was established. Their major work was to collect donations and make periodic subsidy to the China Bible House in Shanghai. They also supplied free Bibles to needy people in Hong Kong.

In 1948, China's political situation was changing rapidly. Therefore, China Bible House had resolved to print Chinese Bibles in Hong Kong.

In 1950, the first Chinese Bible printed in Hong Kong came off the press, and Hong Kong Bible House was established in the same year.

In 1951, the contact with China Bible House from Hong Kong was cut off. Since then, Hong Kong has become the major supply centre of Chinese Bible around the world.

In 1959, Hong Kong Bible House was renamed The Bible Societies in Hong Kong and Taiwan to clearly reflect its actual responsibilities.

Cantonese Version Bible reprinted.

In 1962, Chinese Union Version in duo vertical format reprinted.

In 1970, Sponsored by HKBS, Rev. Chen-chung Lu completed and published his LU’s Translation Bible.

 

In 1979, our name was finalized as Hong Kong Bible Society.

Today’s Chinese Version was published at the same year.

In 1982, Hotel project “Good News for Visitors” launched and over 10,000 free copies was distributed each year.

In 1988, Chinese Union version with New Punctuation Bible launched.

In 2000, first draft of the Revised Chinese Union Version (RCUV) New Testament finished.  Trial Version of the 4 Gospels and the Book of Romans was published.

In Nov. 2005, RCUV New Testament to be published.
